Groaner Alert

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's
mayonnaise was manufactured in England. In fact, the
Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled
for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next
port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York .
This would have been the largest single shipment of
mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico . But as we know,
the great ship did not make it to New York . The ship hit an
iceberg and sank. The people of Mexico , who were crazy
about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery,
were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great,
that they declared a National Day of Mourning.
The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on
May 5th and is known, of course, as -

Sinko De Mayo.

WHAT ??? You expected something educational from me?

You need a shot of Tequila .

Thanks Dan !

W. C. Fields lamented that one of the problems with the world was that everyone was "one drink behind" at the party.

LL, he went to the wrong parties then. I've always been one ahead.

Randy, How long have you been coming here?

Supi, See what happens when you're absent for awhile. You forget how silly this place is, huh.

I had to show this one to The Wife. She is a huge Titanic fan - books, movies, email newsletters, blogs, etc. Yup - she groaned. And it wasn't because of me this time.

Adrienne ... you too?

Cube, I didn't think it would become a memory exercise ... who'd a thunk.

Sinko De Mayo is the Mexican St Patrick's Day. It began as a big observance in LA

PS You do realize that Mexico only tightened up its immigration laws after all the Americans started coming there.

Of course, this was when Texas was still part of Mexico.

Woodsterman (Odie) said...

Edutcher, I guess there's nothing left to say except ... Happy Sinko De Mayo!

I need a shot of Tequila after that, but will have to go to the liquor store--the cubbard is bear!

Woodsterman (Odie) said...

Ron, you've got to be kidding ... it's called planning.

PS We were visiting in Tucson over St Paddy's Day a few years ago and stopped at a Pizza Hut.

The Blonde couldn't believe all the Mexican families coming in from the St Paddy's parade. "They're not Irish", she says.

"You never heard of Black Irish"?, I ask.

(my ancestry, I'm told, goes back to the survivors of the Armada crawling ashore on the Auld Sod)

Woodsterman (Odie) said...

Edutcher, black Irish? I love it when you have the courage to give the blond a history lesson.
