#4) Man, the memories this evoked. I had the candy cigarettes and those chewing gum cigars. The local diner had those jukeboxes. I don't know how many times my fingers stuck to those metal ice cube trays. Green stamps, after licking those for a while I finally started using a sponge. My grandparents got some electric hedge trimmers with S&H green stamps.
Each line brings great memories but those are the top.
#4 - I guess I'm an old f--t I remember penny packs of gum: two (2) squares of gum with a baseball card 78 records, Mom used to buy a loaf of rye bread and cut slices off as necessary, wooden boxes of Velveeta cheese, milk came only in bottles, and I pumped gas at 29 (or less) cents a gallon
boron, I guess we're close to the same age (78). Velveeta in wooden boxes? I never saw Velveeta until I was 12? And in a cardboard box. I don't remember baseball cards with two pieces of gum. I just remember one large flat piece with 5 cards.
My town was so small the telephone didn't need prefixes. Never had roller skates because hot top was only used for cars to drive on. Wringer washers were particularly well remembered because as a little kid, I got my arm caught in one.
edutcher, I grew up in LA and there were tons of party lines. All my friends had them, but we never had to have one. Remember gas wars at 11 cents/gal?
I'll go you one better. In the summer of '70 I picked my cousin up from Fort Hood where he had been for AIT. On the way home we went through some refinery town and gas was .27/gal. The beer we went through cost more than the gas.
I remember cartoons before the movie but never a newsreel. My first McDonald's hamburger was 18 cents, not 15. But I have vivid memories of all the others. The first movie I remember was Batman: The Movie (With Adam West) during a rerelease. I KNOW I was older than 2 when I saw it, so it had to be a rerelease.
Brewvet, Why you're just a pup. I believe my first movie was "The African Queen" in 1951 when I was 4. It was a drive-in theater and I was in my pajamas.
Put it here ... I can't wait to read it. I have the Captcha turned OFF but blogger insists it be there. You should be able to bypass it.

Mr. Handsome, That's gotta hurt..
DeleteI remember them except for party lines; I think that was for the boonies, not the burbs. OTOH I remember gas at $.23/gal.

DeleteThat whole list. First soda I bought from a machine was 5 cents.
ReplyDeleteRobert17, I just go back to 10 cent bottles. Our local Texaco's machine was so cold the cokes would get ice chunks in them.

ReplyDeletePaul V, I don't remember gas up too high until the Carter years .... 50 cents+

DeleteBaseball cards clothes pinned to the spokes of your bicycle... just for the noise!
ReplyDeleteGB
GB, we used old decks of playing cards, never our baseball cards.
