If the telephone cable were a 1200 pair, then it would have 2424 individual wires, if it were paper insulation and that picture looks like paper. For every group of 100, you get one spare pair. Some people can count this out tell you what group is what. Other people can't and turn a two day job into a two week job. The core groups will have one group with different binder markers than the rest, that is group "1". Now depending on which way your facing, towards the office or towards the customer your group "2" will be either clockwise or counter. All the groups spiral and twist, they aren't laid straight. Now get to some lead sheath cable that's wet every 12 feet and you have yourself some fun.
Anon, Well hello Brother. I was a cable splicer for 30 years for Pacific Bell. At Facebook I'm in a group called "Ma-Bell". The guy that posted this picture thought it was a toll 1200 x 22 gauge. I spliced toll cables for 6 months and they were all 1100 x 22 gauge.
In my younger days, I worked putting irrigation systems in golf courses. The boss hit one of those cables with a trencher but didn't even notice anything until the phone company trucks started going back and forth past us. Got it all but 2 pairs of wires. Good times.
Put it here ... I can't wait to read it. I have the Captcha turned OFF but blogger insists it be there. You should be able to bypass it.

A friend got his car pulled out of a tree by a train engine.
ReplyDeleteTrue story and the kind of stuff that comes out of Truckee.
I know how that last feels.
ReplyDeleteI used to work in the AT&T Atlanta Works that made those cables. I don't miss those days.
ReplyDeleteAnon, well thanks, I splice them.
