If we only paid that much for California, couldn't we give it back and just write off the loss

DeleteExactly right. When we left California in the mid 70's to move to WNC, Reagan was still governor. He was followed by another conservative, Pete Wilson, Mayor of San Diego, my home town. After Wilson's term is when the wheels started to come off.
