Had one that would do that on the metal roof on the boathouse at Priest Lake in north Idaho when I was a kid. I think they do that to attract a mate as the sound carries so well. Watch how he looks around afterwards as if to see if he has attracted a girlfriend. Just a thought.
I'm late to this one, but it's a great one. Every spring up here in Calgary Canada we get thousands of Northern Flickers up from the USA. The males are hot and horny and bang away at whatever makes the most noise and that's metal. Siding, venting, eaves troughs, you name it.
And I too have noticed them looking up and around after their drum solos.
