DeleteI also remember being on a 10 family party line and the neighbor girl was the operator at the local phone company so even on a long distance call you had to watch what you said since she would spread any gossip far and wide. I did recognize her voice when I had to call the operator to make a long distance call and had to ask after her folks who still lived across the country road from my folks though I had just seen her folks that day. We had good neighbors back then. Now we hardly know those who live near me.

DeletePhone cables: used to be they had to be buried 6ft, now lucky if its 6 inches. Had a tree removed from the side of my house, then had stump grinded down, ATT phone cable buried less than 2 inches underground. Put electric tape around cable and reburied it. Had no land line so guess what, some day they will find it all taped up ready for repair.
